Tetra Pak Pakistan and UVAS join hands to celebrate the World Milk Day

Karachi, June 1, 2015: Tetra Pak Pakistan and University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences jointly hosted a ceremony at the UVAS campus to mark the 15th World Milk Day in which various aspects of milk and importance of unadulterated milk was highlighted.

World Milk Day was initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 2001 to celebrate milk consumption; its natural origin and nutritional benefits. Each year, the number of countries participating in World Milk Day has increased to reflect increasing interest in adopting healthier lifestyles. Tetra Pak in Greater Middle East and Africa has been celebrating World Milk Day for the past decade.

On this day, Tetra Pak, world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company, shares its competence on Ultra High Treated (UHT) milk in markets around the world. Tetra Pak has a long tradition of promoting safe packaged milk and supporting stakeholders all over the world to develop and implement awareness campaigns about the nutritional values of milk, and benefits of consuming aseptic packaged milk.

Speaking on the occasion, Tetra Pak Pakistan Communication Manager Fahad Maral said: “Tetra Pak focuses on highlighting the importance of consuming UHT milk, as opposed to loose or untreated milk. As milk by nature is a sensitive product, it is highly sensitive to contamination if not handled properly during collection and transportation.”

He added, “UHT milk is tested before reception at the factories and only good quality milk is accepted. Raw milk is then exposed to the UHT process which eliminates all harmful bacteria and the six-layered Tetra Pak carton protects the content from light, air and bacteria which ultimately make UHT milk safe, without the need for any preservatives.

“Aligned with our global vision of ‘Protects What’s Good’, Tetra Pak Pakistan has many initiatives to raise awareness on the benefits of consuming UHT milk. Over the years it has reached out to tens of thousands of healthcare professionals through seminars and workshops, carried out awareness raising activities for school children, organized capacity building of farmers and conducted advocacy through the media for the benefit of the society at large.”

Addressing the audience, UVAS Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Talat Naseer Pasha welcomed Tetra Pak’s initiative to celebrate the World Milk Day together with the university and said, “On this day we have to make people realize how important pure milk is for their health as it contains 18 of the 22 nutrients necessary for a daily intake. It is rich in essential nutrients such as Vitamin A, D and B12, as well as minerals such as; potassium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and protein. Studies have shown that a low intake of milk or milk related products increase the risk of osteoporosis, resulting from calcium deficiency, obesity and tooth decay.”

He said that government should initiate milk and egg supply program in schools to curb alarmingly increasing malnutrition among children.

HBL signs agreement with Punjab Skills Development Fund

Karachi, June 01, 2015: Habib Bank Limited (HBL) and the Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) have recently signed an agreement for a stipend disbursement project worth PKR. 444 Million. The objective of this project isto facilitate PSDF eligible trainees by using HBL’s branchless banking network HBLExpress that gives them a secure and convenient way of transferring money anywhere in Pakistan.


The signing ceremony was held at the HBL Regional Head Office where the agreement was inked by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PSDF, Mr. Ali Sarfraz and the Head of Payment Services Group HBL, Mr. Faiq Sadiq. This initiative is a part of GBP 50 Million training fund setup, with the objective of financing 135,000 individuals by stimulating a market for training services sponsored by DIFD UK.

Mr. Ali Sarfraz shared PSDF’s vision on the upcoming skill development projects and the roadmap in place for empowering the underprivileged youth of Punjab.

On behalf of HBL, Mr. Faiq Sadiq emphasized the need for innovative solutions and emerging technologies to cater to such critical needs of financial inclusion for the unbanked segments of society. Key senior representatives from both HBL and PSDF were also present at the event.

Coca-Cola organizes Nature Trip on World Environment Day

Karachi, June 05, 2015: Coca-Cola Pakistan organized a nature trip to Ayubia National Park, Nathiagali today, on the World Environment Day. Connecting the activity with the celebrations going on throughout this year to celebrate the 100 years anniversary of Coca-Cola’s Contour Bottle, one hundred people were hosted by Coca-Cola on the Nature Trip. Participants included social media activists, media representatives, environmentalists and nature lovers, and a large number of people from civil society.

The group of one hundred was taken to Nathiagali to give it a first-hand experience of the Watershed Management Project that Coca-Cola has been carrying out in Ayubia National Park area for the past 6 years, in association with WWF-Pakistan. This flagship intervention is a comprehensive project which has achieved substantial measurable results already. These include recharge of more than 388 million liters of water in last 5 years, plantation of more than 60,000 trees of indigenous species, development of several hundred fruit orchards, providing livelihoods to local communities, installation of rainwater harvesting structures in more than 100 schools, collection for reuse of more than a million liters of rainwater through rooftop harvesting and protection and rejuvenation of the 26 natural springs in the project area.

On arrival at Nathiagali, the group was first given a presentation on the watershed management project by a WWF team, following which the participants were taken to different project sites. A visit to the WWF Center at Donga Gali was next, followed by all participants going for a nature walk on the Pipeline track from Doonga Gali to Ayubia.

“Our project in the Ayubia National Park area is tangible evidence of Coca-Cola walking the talk when it comes to environmental conservation,” said Fahad Qadir, Director Public Affairs and Communications of Coca-Cola Pakistan, adding, “What is really important is that the benefits of the project have first of all accrued directly to the local communities, whereas the regeneration of natural springs and sub-aquifers will have long-term, sustainable benefits for a much larger area.”

Visa launches ‘Cash to Card’ campaign in Pakistan

Integrated Marketing Campaign to Raise Consumer Awareness and Drive Usage of Visa cards

Karachi, June 04, 2015 – Visa, a global payments technology company, has launched an educational campaign titled ‘Cash to Card’ in Pakistan. Running until 30 June, 2015, the campaign aims to displace cash by encouraging consumers to use Visa debit and credit cards at Point of Sale for everyday spend categories in the country. It also aims at making transactions more efficient in terms of safety and convenience.

‘Cash to Card’ highlights the benefits of using cards instead of cash for day-to-day transactions, such as convenience, reliability and security. According to a 2013 Visa-commissioned Moody’s Analytics study, the benefits of cards also extend to the national economy, as the usage of cards helps promote economic growth and efficiency.

  • Convenience – the ability to make purchases online, at retailers – even to pay bills
  • Security – safer than cash and registered cards are replaceable if lost or stolen

PPAF holds National Consultation on Humanitarian Response in Pakistan

Islamabad, June 08, 2015: Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) organized a national consultation on humanitarian effectiveness and response in Pakistan. The consultation was held in preparation for the World Humanitarian Summit 2016 and was the last in a series of consultations around four UNOCHA selected themes.

The consultation was chaired by Dr. Hany El Banna, President and Founder of The Humanitarian Forum UK-an affiliate of the PPAF. PPAF chose to focus on two of the themes-reducing vulnerability and managing risk; and managing people in conflict. PPAF adopted a dual approach to add value to this interaction, keeping in perspective its role as sector develop.

Dr. Hany El Banna led the session and emphasized to put beneficiaries first by building trust between different communities, organisations and individuals to maximize the effectiveness of humanitarian action. The joint working of humanitarian and development organisations of all sizes internationally can play effective role in addressing calamities in future.

He added that through training, good governance, cooperation and maintaining humanitarian standards will create stronger and efficient networks that can making the most of resources, learning from each other and foster innovation. The step one was concluded before the consultation and involved PPAF partners in every province conducting focal group discussions with community members previously affected by a disaster or conflict situation. These findings were presented during the consultation by partner representatives.

CEO PPAF Qazi Azmat Isa remained fully involved in the consultation and concluded the day by emphasizing the importance of having communities’ voices heard before everyone else. He said that as an apex institution, PPAF has always remained on the forefront to respond the natural calamities under relief, early recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation projects. He said PPAF managed reconstruction of 122,000 seismically-safe houses affected by 2005 earthquake.


He further said PPAF also played a significant part in facilitating return of over 900 families from Rajanpur to Dera Bugti. The 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 monsoon rains and subsequent floods stranded millions of people and damaged their assets. PPAF was the first one to provide food and non-food items (quilts, hygiene kits), mobile medical assistance, and shelters to the affectees of these floods.

He said that PPAF was also on the forefront to respond to the plight of the earthquake affectees in various parts of Balochistan in September 2013. In all these programmes and interventions, PPAF never compromised over its core values of transparency, accountability and inclusion. Ms. Samia Liaquat Ali Khan, Group Head, Compliance & Quality Assurance, PPAF summarized the key points of the group discussion.

Senior representatives from more than 25 organizations including directors from NDMA, Country Representative from MDTF, Country Head of Pakistan Humanitarian Forum, Country Director, Islamic Relief, Country Director, Muslim Charities Forum, Country Director, Hope 87, Director Development Studies, PIDE, REDR-UK, National Humanitarian Forum, Embassy of Italy and PPAF partner organizations attended the consultation.

The Humanitarian Forum is a global network of key organisations from Muslim donors and recipient countries and their counterparts in Western regions.

LG Music Flow Offers More Listening Options with Google Cast

Karachi, June 12, 2015 — LG Electronics (LG) will introduce its first audio products to offer Google Cast in its lineup of smart Hi-Fi speakers and sound bars. LG’s Music Flow is a smart Hi-Fi audio system that takes the experience of reconnecting with favorite music to a whole new level. Google Cast will allow anyone to send their favorite music from their AndroidTM phone or tablet, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows laptop or Chromebook to their Google Cast-enabled LG Music Flow audio speakers and sound bars.

The Music Flow line-up from LG includes the company’s first battery-powered Portable Wi-Fi Speaker (Model H4 Portable), Wi-Fi Speakers (Model H7/H5/H3) and Wi-Fi Sound Bars (Model HS9/HS7/HS6). Each model can be controlled using LG’s intuitive Music Flow app for various Android, iOS or Chromebook mobile devices.

With Google Cast, proud LG Music Flow owners will not only be able to stream music from their mobile devices but also listen to tunes from their favorite online music service, including Google PlayTM Music, Pandora, Songza, TuneIn, iHeartRadio and Rdio, among others. HBL Acquires Barclays Bank PLC Pakistan

Karachi: Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Pakistan’s largest bank, had announced earlier that it had entered into an agreement with Barclays Bank PLC to acquire Barclays banking business in Pakistan. This acquisition was approved by the State Bank of Pakistan and from 15th June 2015 the Pakistan business of Barclays Bank PLC has been amalgamated with and into HBL.

On this milestone, Mr. Nauman Dar, President and CEO of HBL stated, “HBL takes pride in this acquisition and we thank the State Bank of Pakistan, the Barclays Staff and the Customers for their cooperation”, Mr. Dar continued by welcoming the Barclays customers and staff to the HBL family.

Emirates SkyCargo Honours Local Agents

KARACHI, June 16, 2015– Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates, presented its top ten cargo agents with special achievement awards at a glittering awards ceremony held recently in Karachi. These awards recognize the important role cargo agents and forwarders play in contributing to Emirates SkyCargo’s success during 2014.


Mr Khalid Bardan, Emirates Vice President for Pakistan, attended the Karachi ceremony and distributed the awards with Mr Faisal Yaqoob, Emirates Cargo Manager for Pakistan.

“It has been a challenging yet rewarding year for Emirates SkyCargo. I am grateful for the continued support of all our cargo agents and would like to thank them for their contribution and for delivering such a consistently high-quality performance,” said Mr Bardan.

“Emirates SkyCargo operations in Pakistan continue to register a strong performance with load factors increasing over time, indicating Pakistan’s strong potential for continued growth in cargo and we look forward to an even better performance in 2015. I would like to thank all my colleagues for their fantastic efforts and congratulate all our winners,” he added.

The event, which was attended by 120 people from the cargo industry, was held at the Ramada Hotel.

The criteria of the awards, which are held annually, were based on the revenue generated by the agents and their overall performance in the market.

“Emirates Sky Cargo’s success can be attributed to the consistent quality of our products, services and our ability to deliver to our customers over the years and we hope to keep achieving record-breaking heights in the future as well,” said Mr Yaqoob. “We have always valued our relationships with our cargo partners, and these awards are to recognise their commitment and contribution to Emirates SkyCargo”.

In November 2013, Emirates SkyCargo added Sialkot to its route network in Pakistan, with four flights weekly from the city known as the industrial hub of Pakistan.

Since services commenced in 1985, Emirates SkyCargo has built a reputation for leading the industry in innovation, flexibility and service. It has received numerous international awards, including ‘Cargo Airline of the Year 2013’ (Air Cargo Week), ‘Cargo Airline of the Year 2013’, ‘Best Middle East Cargo Airline’ (both Air Cargo News), ‘Best Air Cargo Carrier Middle East’ (AFSCA), ‘Cargo Operator of the Year’ (SCATA) and ‘Air Cargo Excellence Award’ (Air Cargo World).

LG Turns Up the Cool This Summer with the Launch of the Titan Deluxe Big Split Air Conditioner

The S306EC/S366EC packs a newly designed Tropical Compressor, which offers high reliability even when temperatures reach 60-degrees Celsius.

Compared to previous Titan models, the Titan Deluxe Big split air conditioner can generate blasts of cool wind that can be felt as far as 20-meters away from the cooling unit. This is thanks to an improved fluid dynamic framework design, which enhances air flow and maximizes the capacity of air intake and discharge. With its Optimized Airflow system, the Titan Deluxe Big offers four way swing, a six step vertical vane and five step horizontal vane. LG continues to use a SKEW FAN that is 25% larger than what is conventionally used, and this combined with the aforementioned features and design elements allows the air conditioner to cool homes quicker and more effectively.

With JET COOL technology, the Titan Deluxe Big is optimized to disperse air evenly at high speed, which allows the air conditioner to reduce temperatures by 5-degrees Celsius within three minutes. This is 20% quicker than comparable split air conditioners can offer.
