Emirates makes ‘flying better’ in 2018

Karachi / DUBAI– January 02, 2019 – Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, delivered another year of trendsetting product and service initiatives across its fleet and network to make ‘flying better’ for its customers.

In the last twelve months, Emirates carried over 59* million passengers on over 3,700 passenger flights on average per week. The airline proudly served a diverse menu of over 66 million meals on its flights departing Dubai*, and moved close to 36 million pieces of baggage* in Dubai to its global network of 157 destinations.  In 2018, Emirates operated over 192,000 flights, with its fleet of 274 aircraft travelling more than 908 million kilometres around the globe.

Reflecting on 2018’s milestones, Sir Tim Clark, President, Emirates airline said: “Our ambitions have always been driven by a commitment to continual improvement – to make the customer experience better, and to make our business operations more efficient.

“We had our challenges in 2018, however we continued to maximise opportunities by deploying our capacity to best serve customer demand, keeping a close watch on our costs, utilising technology to improve business performance, as well as developing more customer-centric products and services to provide our passengers with greater choice. Our customers remain at the heart of everything we do, and our continual investments in the business will be the foundation on which we will build our future growth and continue to deliver solid results.”

Making the air travel experience better for customers

The year began with Emirates setting out on a US$150 million programme to refurbish its Boeing 777-200LR fleet.  These 10 newly refurbished aircraft are set in a two-class configuration offering 38 Business Class seats with wider seats laid out in a 2-2-2 configuration, and 264 seats in Economy Class.  The revamp also brought airier and more spacious cabins throughout the aircraft.

Emirates is now planning for the next generation cabin design of its Boeing 777X programme. On its new generation A380s entering service from 2020 onwards, Emirates is planning the deployment of its Premium Economy product, featuring a bespoke design and an array of experience-rich touches.

In March, Emirates celebrated 10 years of mobile connectivity onboard as it continues to be at the forefront of innovation with inflight connectivity and entertainment.  During 2018, over 12 million passengers connected to Wi-Fi onboard Emirates.  Over the summer, football fans eagerly cheered on their national teams during the FIFA World Cup onboard 175 Emirates aircraft equipped with Live TV. In 2019, 50 more aircraft will be retrofitted with Live TV, providing even more choice for customers to watch live sports, breaking news and much more.

In addition, Emirates now offers over 1,000 movies as part of its over 4,000 channel selection on ice, its award-winning in-flight entertainment system. The most popular movie onboard Emirates in 2018 was Black Panther, while the majority of passengers enjoyed comedy of all genres on offer.

Ice continues to win accolades with its 14th consecutive World’s Best Inflight Entertainment award at the 2018 Skytrax World Airline Awards.

Delivering the best culinary experience for customers, Emirates has been building on its already popular special menus and dishes marking occasions including Ramadan, Lunar New Year, amongst others.

During the busy summer period, Emirates delighted families with a new ‘Fly With Me’ animal toy selection, and new Lonely Planet activity kits for children. Travellers passing through Emirates Terminal 3 in Dubai were also treated to complimentary cups of ice-cream.

Enhancing the ground experience

Emirates introduced Home Check-in in April, a new service allowing customers in Dubai to check in for their flights from the comfort of their own homes, hotel or office, and have their luggage transported prior to their flight.  So far, over 6,000 bags have been checked in for customers using this service.

Working closely with stakeholders, Emirates announced it will soon launch the world’s first ‘biometric path’ offering customers a smooth and seamless airport journey at the airline’s hub in Dubai International airport. Utilising the latest in biometric technology – a mix of facial and iris recognition, Emirates passengers will in the upcoming months be able to check-in for their flight, complete immigration formalities, enter the Emirates Lounge, and board their flights, by simply walking through different airport touchpoints.

In line with its ‘fly better’ brand promise, Emirates is bringing in a brand new fleet of high tech buses for airside passenger operations, with a full fleet of 128 buses to be operational by 2020 . These dedicated buses will ferry Emirates’ passengers between terminals and its aircraft at remote stands in greater comfort.

Making connectivity better

Emirates boosted choice and connectivity for customers in 2018. As the airline received new aircraft, four new routes were launched, frequencies were added to 20 destinations, and capacity to eight cities was upgraded.

Emirates hit two fleet milestones in 2018, celebrating 10 years of A380 operations in August, and taking delivery of its last Boeing 777-300ER, its 146th in December.

In January, the airline announced a US$ 16 billion (AED 58.7 billion) deal for 36 additional Airbus A380 aircraft, to be delivered to Emirates from 2020 onwards.  Emirates also expanded the number of cities served by its popular A380 aircraft to 50 destinations with recent launch of scheduled services to Hamburg and Osaka. The airline also led one-off A380 services to five cities: Beirut, Muscat, Islamabad, Riyadh and Accra, and temporary services to St. Petersburg.

LG Presents the Future of Smart Kitchens at CES 2019

To provide more flexible ways to connect to the wealth of smart recipes available to the smart kitchen, LG is adding its XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9 Smart Display to the family. This powerful stereo speaker with AI built-in includes the convenience of Google Assistant for a pleasant, hands-free option to cooking. The 8-inch touch screen displays thousands of smart personalized recipes from Innit so there’s less reason to opt for eating out.

At CES 2019, LG is introducing a revolutionary beer-making machine, LG HomeBrew, to round out the smart kitchen portfolio that also includes the InstaView ThinQ refrigerator and QuadWash dishwasher. LG smart kitchen customers can enjoy a cold brew while looking up recipes on the refrigerator’s embedded screen. Once the right dish has been identified, the recipe can be sent to the oven which begins preheating to the right temperature. After cooking the meal, the EasyClean feature in LG’s combination wall oven removes any food residue that might have splattered on the interior. Finally, the same smart recipe will inform the QuadWash dishwasher of the optimal setting to ensure spotless cleaning of the dishware and utensils that were used to enjoy the delicious meal.

LG to Unveil New Gram Laptops, Evolved to a Whole New Scale at CES 2019

Adding more processing power and all-around usability, the LG gram 17 stays true to LG gram’s winning formula, balancing the technology and features users demand with a level of portability previously thought impossible for a laptop this size. The 14-inch model is a 2-in-1 “convertible” laptop which conveniently folds to transform from laptop to tablet and back again, presenting users with unparalleled flexibility for a truly versatile on-the-go computing solution.

The convertible model boasts a distinctive form factor with 14-inch large touch screen maintaining ultra-light weight. CR-NORINCO gives back to the society in a marginalized rural area

Lahore, January 16, 2019: CR-NORINCO, a joint venture of China Railways Corporation (CR) and China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), and also the main contractor for the Orange Line Metro Rail Transit System, has come forward to support female education. It has carried out desperately required renovation to the infrastructure of the Government Girls Elementary School, situated in Chah Dhaban, Kasur district, a marginalized village  with a total population of about 1000 residents. This is the only  girls education institute in the entire local area, and has an enrolment of 250 pupils, or almost 25 percent of the village population. Till now it lacked even basic facilities like school furniture, access to safe and clean drinking water and a proper playground.


The intervention by CR-NORINCO is aimed at creating an enabling environment to educate the less privileged segment of Pakistan’s rural society. Along with renovating the basic school facilities, CR-NORINCO also built an additional lab to facilitate modern learning for the students. New equipment installed at the school also included a projector to enable audio visual learning and making the students aware about latest teaching methodologies and techniques. Part of new developments also included improving access to student’s outdoor activities by upgrading the existing school playground, transforming it to a fully functional play space.

The refurbished school’s inauguration ceremony was attended by top officials from the district Government as well as representatives from CR-NORINCO.

Speaking about the Company’s intervention, Mr. Guo, Deputy General Manager at CR-NORINCO said, “As a caring corporate citizen working in Pakistan, we felt obliged to give back to society in some way, and without doubt the most important contribution one can make is to support education, especially female education and empower the marginalized segment of Pakistan’s rural society. We are humbled that we could provide the students of this school the educational resources they need to build, and eventually lead a strong and just nation. This project is a small step towards this holistic goal”.

Third edition of Ufone Balochistan Football Cup to kick off from March 04

Quetta, January 21, 2019: Pakistani telecom company Ufone is bringing back Balochistan’s favourite football tournament. Due to start on March 04, this will be the third edition of the tournament and will feature in 8 cities of the province. Football is very popular among the youth of Balochistan and Ufone has been encouraging the emerging players from the province to showcase their talent through this tournament.

“Youth in Balochistan is passionate about football, and we at Ufone believe in providing them with the right platform to develop their skills further and represent the country at a national level”, said Ufone’s Spokesperson. Due to the popularity of the last two editions, Ufone has included two new cities to the tournament this year.

This year, a total of 720 young footballers from 48 teams will participate in the tournament’s qualifiers which will be kicking off from Gawadar and Panjgur simultaneously. It will then move to Khuzdar, Noshki, Loralai, Chaman, Pishin and Quetta where the qualifier round will end on March 21. The finals will start from March 25 and the two top teams will face each other in Quetta. This will be the first time in the tournament’s history that the finals will be played under a stadium’s flood lights.

Ufone believes this championship will help endorse football in the province and prove to be a great platform for the emerging young players to learn and display their footballing skills. Ufone’s brand ambassador and national football team star Fazal Muhammad will be participating in the tournament and will provide coaching and tips to the young emerging players. The initiative shows Ufone’s commitment to the people of Balochistan, which reaffirms the company’s tagline “It’s all about U.”

Requests for vegan meals on board increase by over 40% in January

Karachi /Dubai: Jan 29, 2019 – Emirates served over 20,000 plant-based meals across all classes in January, known to Vegans worldwide as Veganuary. The worldwide movement, to encourage Veganism especially in January has seen on board requests for vegan meals increase by over 40% this month.

The airline caters to all its customers and has a range of dedicated menus for medical or religious meal requirements which are designed with a team of nutritionists and chefs. Vegan meals rank as the third most commonly requested special meal in Economy Class. Last month, travellers voted Emirates as the Best Airline for Vegan Meals in a poll by Vegan News.

Emirates has over 170 plant-based recipes in its kitchen to cater to its vegan customers. Emirates’ team of nutritionists and chefs use the freshest vegetables and unique grains to create the special meals. Known for its regionally inspired cuisine on board, Emirates takes the same approach for its vegan meals with recipes inspired by its destinations. Some of the most popular dishes include Mushroom Ravioli, Vegetable Tagine served with couscous, and a Sweet Potato, Lentil and Spinach Ragout served with steaming brown rice. The meals are served complete with a special selection of mouth-watering vegan desserts such as Key Lime Parfait with date and citrus compote, Moist Chocolate Cake, or a Chia Seed Pudding.

Vegan meals, along with other special meals, are available on all Emirates flights and across all classes and can be requested 24 hours before departure. All the menus on board are changed monthly.

Emirates serves an impressive cheese selection on board and to ensure no customer is turned away, the airline introduced vegan cheese on board in April last year. To date, Emirates has served 18,000 kgs of the nut based cheese.

For customers who are less inclined towards a plant-based diet, Emirates’ regular menus are also whipped up by award-winning chefs. The airline serves over 110 million meals on board each year, with the same attention to detail given to creating delightful dishes in Economy, Business or First Class. Catering for more than 55 million dine-in guests a year travelling to and from over 140 cities across 6 continents, no one understands global culinary trends better than Emirates as it serves destination-inspired cuisine on board the world’s largest flying restaurant.

Byco’s SPM Imports 10 million tons of POL products; celebrates 6 years of safe operations

  • Byco’s SPM has continuously operated safely since its launch in 2012, including through monsoon periods

(Karachi, 30 January 2018). Pakistan’s leading oil company, Byco Petroleum’s Single Point Mooring (SPM) has imported 10 million tons of POL products and celebrated six years of safe continuous operations since its inception today. Byco’s SPM has been operating since 2012 including the severe monsoon season, which was previously considered impossible for the area. Byco’s SPM is Pakistan’s only floating terminal and revolutionizes the handling of crude oil and refined petroleum products in the country. The SPM has been set up in the deep sea and is connected to a storage tank via 15 km of both on-shore and sub-sea pipelines. Byco has a storage capacity of 243,000 metric tons.

Mr. Mansoor Shafique Qureshi, Vice President of Operations, BPPL, remarked at a ceremony marking the achievement: “Byco’s SPM is a national asset for Pakistan. Its continuous safe operations are a testament to our promise of keeping safety Byco’s top priority. I want to congratulate the entire Byco team on this singular achievement and on having imported 10 million tons of POL products since the SPM’s inception.”

Byco’s SPM allows Byco to import and export crude oil and refined petroleum products directly, significantly reducing traffic at Pakistan’s ports situated in Karachi and Port Qasim, and saving the associated delays and demurrage charges. It enables Byco to be the only vertically integrated petroleum firm in the nation.
