Beyond the number 8

As we run through this first month of 2024, the numerical composition of the year itself, with the sum of its digits amounting to 8, beckons us to explore the different associations this number holds in various traditions. And what fascinating insights come to light!

To start with, in numerology, the number 8 is often regarded as a symbol of balance, power and harmony. Its symmetrical form signifies cycles, reinforcing the idea of what goes around comes around. I will bet you never thought of the figure 8 in this way! I certainly didn’t.

In Chinese culture, the number 8 is considered highly auspicious due to its phonetic resemblance to the word for wealth and prosperity. This belief has led to the prominence of the number in various aspects of Chinese life, from business to personal rituals.

In Hinduism, 8 represents Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, bringing a sense of divine intervention and guidance. Whereas, in another ancient religion, Buddhism, the eightfold path elucidates the principles to attain enlightenment, emphasizing right understanding, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration.

That’s not all! In ancient Egyptian beliefs, the number 8 was considered a symbol of order and stability. This symbolism was encapsulated in the concept of the Ogdoad, a collective of eight deities embodying primordial forces. Today for the Egyptians, the number 8 represents a harmonious balance.

Similarly, Norse mythology ascribes a deep meaning to the number 8 as well, intertwining it with the concept of infinity. Within this mythology, 8 is not only a numerical value but a representation of an eternal and cyclical nature.

Last but certainly not the least, the Tarot’s eighth card, Strength, embodies qualities like courage, resilience and inner fortitude. Depicted with a figure calmly taming a fierce lion, it signifies the triumph of inner strength over external challenges. The card prompts reflection on facing difficulties with a composed spirit.

Isn’t all of that quite something else? Really makes you wonder how this one number gained a special significance in all otherwise quite different cultures across the world.
